Kuwait Unveils New Rules for Naming Roads and Cities
Kuwait has introduced new rules on how cities, suburbs, roads, and public squares can be named. The decision came under Ministerial Resolution No. 490 of 2025, published in the Official Gazette Kuwait Today. This amendment updates some provisions of Resolution No. 507 of 2023.
According to the new decision, only Emirs and Crown Princes of Kuwait can have cities, suburbs, or regions named after them. Roads, streets, and squares may be named after Kuwait’s rulers, kings, sultans, governors, princes, heads of friendly countries, historical figures, and selected sheikhs from the ruling family. They can also carry the names of countries, cities, or capitals, based on reciprocity agreements.
The resolution also clarifies that some existing street names not linked to people will remain unchanged. However, aside from the exceptions mentioned, new roads and squares will mainly be numbered instead of being given names.
The decision took effect immediately upon its issuance and has been officially published in the Kuwait Today Gazette.
